The BACnet User Group was hosting an exciting debate you won’t want to miss:
Do we really need BACnet/SC?
Can traditional BACnet be secured by other methods?
Mike David from Siemens presented on the topic “Who needs BACnet SC? Securing BACnet/IP communication.” He presented an alternative approach on to how to structure BACnet/IP using broadcast shaping, VLANs, and physical security.

At this meeting we did a deep-dive into the world of BACnet/SC (BACnet Secure Connect) - the future of the buildings. As you know BACnet Secure Connect (BACnet/SC) is an addendum to the BACnet protocol released by the ASHRAE BACnet Committee. It is a secure, encrypted communication datalink layer that is specifically designed to meet the requirements, policies, and constraints of minimally managed to professionally managed IP infrastructures.
But how does it work in real life? During the meeting, we saw how BACnet/SC will be used in projects based on guidance in the Manufacturers' Guide to BAS Cybersecurity. The guide was created by a BAS industry collaboration to ensure the manageability of secure and interoperable BACnet systems. You will see how a BACnet/SC device is securely onboarded, how they are provisioned with necessary certificates, how the device can be monitored and managed through its lifetime. This included a demonstration of BACnet International's new BACCARI tool.
We learned how you can easily and securely segment your network, what the best practices are and ask any questions about BACnet and BACnet/SC our ASHRAE fellow Jim Butler who participated in the creation of BACnet/SC.
Presentation on how BACnet relates to decarbonization and ESG objectives.
You can learn more about BACnet/SC on BACnet International site. Signup for the free BACnet Insitute here for the wealth of resources on BACnet. Watch the video on utilizing BACnet/SC in Smart Buildings from AHR Expo education session here. Catch up with videos from our previous meetings BACnet/SC - secure alternative to BACnet.
As usual, the meeting was sponsored by BACnet International - free food and cash bar. BACnet International facilitates the successful use of the BACnet protocol in North America and worldwide, with education (The BACnet Institute), product testing and certification (BACnet Testing Laboratories), and promotional activities.
